The latest advances in laser technology have made tattoo removal treatment faster and more effective than ever. Q-Switched-type lasers are able to produce the high power pulses required to disintegrate the tattoo’s pigments into smaller particles able to be absorbed and expelled by the human body.
Laser technology is also useful for tattoo retouching or the correction of micropigmentation tattoos on lips, eyebrows or eyelids.
The number of sessions required varies, depending on the tattoo and the patient’s characteristics. The sessions are spaced about 4 to 8 weeks apart. As each patient reacts differently to the treatment depending on the type of tattoo ink and size, health condition, type of laser, etc., the doctor will determine the recovery time between sessions based on the observed progress and the skin type.
Usually a session lasts about half an hour at most. To provide the patient with comfort the doctor will apply cold, local sedation, skin desensitizers and other products to the area under treatment.
After each session the area under treatment can show some inflammation, redness and other effects that usually will last just a few hours. The treated skin has to be kept covered with an ointment and gauze. As a general rule the treated area of skin should be protected from sunlight exposure. The doctor will provide any additional advice during the session.
In some cases temporary hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation or changes in skin texture may occur. Those usually disappear after a month or two.
