The correction of small deformities such as those of an underdeveloped chin (retrognatia) that gives the jaw a short and receding appearance, or somewhat flat cheekbones that affect our profile producing a flattened face, is easily achieved by means of the implantation of solid silicone prostheses through small incisions.
These minor surgery interventions improve the profile of the face in subtle and very pleasant ways, making our features sharper and more angular. They can also be combined with a Bichat Bags removal procedure.
ANAESTHESIA
In most cases the procedure is done under local anaesthesia.
AUGMENTATION MENTOPLASTY
It consists of the placement of a solid silicone prosthesis inside a pocket created in front of the chin. The incision can be done on the skin under the chin, leaving a small scar, or inside the lower lip in front of the lower incisor teeth.
CHEEKBONES AUGMENTATION (MALARPLASTY)
Consists of the placement of a solid silicone prosthesis in a pocket created over the malar bone (cheekbone). The incision is done in the oral mucous membrane, in the upper fold between the gum and the upper lip.
DURATION OF THE INTERVENTION
The intervention lasts about 20 minutes for a chin augmentation and 60 for a cheekbone augmentation.
RECOVERY
Recovery is fast: taking only a couple of days with a mild edema and some numbness in the affected areas (chin and lower lip or cheekbones). If the intervention is done from the inside of the mouth there is no need to later remove the stitches as in such cases absorbable suture is applied. Pain is minimal for both treatments.
RISKS
As for any surgical wound infection is a constant threat, especially if the implant was introduced through oral surgery. In that case it is important to perform adequate disinfection with antiseptic mouthwashes during the first days after the intervention. Prosthesis displacement can occur, producing slight asymmetries, although they are infrequent. A certain degree of hypaesthesia or paresis in the affected areas is also possible.
RECOMMENDATIONS
After surgery apply ice to the intervened areas. Take extreme care in maintaing oral hygiene through the use of antiseptic mouthwash.
