BEFORE AND AFTER
Botulinum toxin (‘Botox’) is applied in order to temporarily relax the facial muscles responsible for the lines of expression in our forehead, between the brows (frown lines), and around our eyes (‘crow’s feet’). Previous to its application the doctor must make a study of the patient’s facial features and gestural expression so as not to alter it.
The treatment consists of a series of small Botox injections done on the area subjected to treatment. The botulinum toxin blocks communication between the muscles and the nerve terminals that trigger their contraction, temporarily leaving them in a state of relaxation. The application of Botox is done in a single session and the effects start becoming noticeable two days past it. They reach their full effect a week after treatment, with skin creases no longer asserting themselves.
The effects of Botox last about four to six months, progressively disappearing until the face’s lines of expression return to their initial state or even a somewhat improved one, as during such period the patient hasn’t gesticulated in that area of the face and so the wrinkles haven’t deepened.
PROCEDURE
After cleaning the area about to be treated and applying an antiseptic, the doctor will tell the patient to do a few gestures such as a frown or an eye shrug which will highlight the expression lines and will allow him to mark with a dermographic pencil the series of spots where the toxin will be injected.
The injections are performed with a very thin needle and don’t require anaesthesia.
After the Botox is injected, the area is cleaned again and a photoprotective cream is applied to guard it from sunlight.
The effects become noticeable two or three days after the session and reach their full effect 7 to 10 days after.
