This is a rejuvenating technique that applies to relatively young patients who are finding small signs of flaccidity, sagging and early wrinkles in their faces.
WHO NEEDS IT?
Age of the patients usually ranges between 35 and 45 years.
It is a rather non-aggressive procedure with a speedy recovery, which is the reason why it is often called a ‘weekend lift’. The goal is not to de-age an already young face but freshen its looks, giving its smoothness and firmness back.
ANAESTHESIA
The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia plus sedation.
SURGICAL TECHNIQUE
Incisions are made in front of the ears following their shape, as that will make scars unnoticeable. Then several centimetres of skin in the cheeks are detached to allow deeper access to the muscles and fasciae where the real rejuvenating work is done. Afterwards any excess skin is resected — usually a minimal amount — and the incisions are closed with intradermal suture.
DURATION OF THE PROCEDURE
It usually lasts about an hour and a half.
RECOVERY
The bandages are removed 48 hours after surgery. As this intervention hardly leaves any ecchymosis (bruising) the patient’s appearance is nearly normal. Stitches are removed a week later.
RISKS
It is very rare for complications to occur with this type of intervention. That said, as in any surgical procedure, there is a certain risk of infection and haematoma (blood accumulation under the skin) due to some unexpected bleeding. As the detached skin during surgery is minimal, it is not typical for necrosis or alopecia to occur in the same way they do in frequent smokers who subject themselves to more extensive lifting operations.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The patient must not ingest aspirin during the week before surgery.
It is useful to supplement the patient’s diet with vitamin A, E and C for two weeks before the intervention.
After surgery it is recommended to apply ice water on the intervened area for 48 hours, with rest periods.
